Dear Friends,
The emotions of the 2016 presidential election can still be vividly felt today by many. Many
of us had strong reactions to the racist, anti-immigrant, anti-gay and anti-women's rights rhetoric that was promoted throughout the campaign. We heard about plans to make the United States greater by marginalizing some of the communities that already make this country great--immigrants, women, and people of diverse faiths, including Muslims. And nowhere else in the world do these groups weave a richer fabric of cultures and customs
than here in New York City.
At NYAWC, we proudly serve anyone who comes through our door, including all of the aforementioned groups. In fact, immigrant women make up the majority of the 1,400 survivors that come to us annually seeking help. They come to NYAWC to seek refuge from violence, seek recovery from their trauma, and seek renewal of their inner self. This is why we cannot and do not tolerate what has happened and what it portends.
January 2017 is not that far away. We must continue to band together and stand up against bigotry, intolerance, and the degradation of women's rights and human rights.
NYAWC is wholeheartedly committed to fighting unacceptable acts of racism, misogyny, and violence in our community and society. How? By continuing to be the pillar of support and comprehensive services in the city we've proudly served for the past 34 years.
Together, let's shape the future we want our families and future generations to inherit.
Sincerely,
NYAWC
