Support Group Coordinator – Full Time

Reports to: Assistant Director of Client Services

NYAWC (The New York Asian Women’s Center) is the largest Asian American focused domestic violence (DV) agency in the country, a premier human trafficking (HT) serving organization, and a national demonstration project that provides model services to survivors of sexual violence (SV).  Our long-standing program for children of survivors of DV, transitional housing services and legal immigration services are outstanding.  Most recently we have begun a program to provide services to child survivors of SV and a robust program to assist Asian survivors who are over 50 years of age.

The goal of Client Services is to provide the comprehensive direct services that support the recovery of survivors across the lifespan from DV, HT, and SV. The intent is for all staff to contribute towards a survivor gaining self-sufficiency.  Our services include two confidential emergency residences, community offices in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, and at City-run Family Justice Centers (FJC) in those three boroughs as well.  In 2015 we implemented an Asian-based culturally-sensitive model of practice which focuses on facilitating recovery through the relationship between the counselor and the client, teaching self-care, providing group services and utilizing Asian wellness practices.

The Support Group Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to oversee all support groups including wellness activities for survivors of DV, HT, and SV across the lifespan.  The coordinator will collaborate with other program supervisors and managers to develop an agency wide plan and evaluate the plan to continue improving and expanding group services.  The coordinator will work closely with advocates facilitating support groups (facilitators) and assist them in developing and implementing curriculum that corresponds with the model of practice and needs of survivors.  The coordinator is expected to learn different wellness modalities such as acupuncture, acupressure and meditation to provide ongoing training and group supervision to the facilitators across programs and sites. 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with anti-violence work, the Asian community, criminal justice, client advocacy, and/or human trafficking.
  • Master’s in Social Work, Psychology or related field;
  • Knowledge in wellness modalities a plus
  • Must be fluent in English and an Asian language
  • Great communication skills – written and verbal, to individuals and groups
  • Ability to be self-directed and highly motivated.
  • Flexible hours required.

Development Manager

Reports to: Development Director

The New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) works with survivors of gender-based violence to rise above trauma and build a path to healing. We bring critical resources and deep cultural competency to help Asian communities find refuge, recovery and renewal.  We work with survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual violence across the lifespan. With a $4.9 million annual budget, NYAWC offers a 24/7 hotline; counseling and case management services for survivors and their children; emergency residential and transitional housing; and, immigration legal services, along with other support services. NYAWC seeks a Development Manager to support year-round fundraising efforts for a rapidly expanding agency.

Annually, NYAWC raises over 80% of its funds through Federal, State and City grants and the rest through foundations, corporations and individuals. NYAWC is working to diversify its funding streams and increase its private contributions over the next 2-3 years.  In addition to the position we are looking to fill, the Development Department is comprised of a Director of Development, Manager of Volunteer Engagement, and a Development Associate, as well as a part-time Communications Coordinator.  The department is also supported by volunteers, as needed.  

The Development Manager is a high-level fundraising and communications generalist in the department. She serves as the agency’s primary government and foundation grant writer and manages the portfolio of federal, state, and city grants, which compose 80% of NYAWC’s annual $4.9 million budget. The Development Manager supports the Director of Development in prospecting and cultivating relationships with lapsed, existing, and new foundations. The Development Manager also writes and supports annual mail and direct response campaigns per year. This position supervises and mentors the Development Associate and Development Volunteer(s).

Responsibilities:

  • Manage 20+ grant and contract portfolio composing 80% of NYAWC’s annual $4.9 million budget.
  • Act as agency’s lead Government and Foundation grant writer.
  • Strategize with Executive Leadership and Program Managers to develop new programs.
  • Prospect research, cultivate, and manage relationships with Foundation funders.
  • Liaise between Program and Fiscal Departments to meet funder requirements.
  • Support and execute annual appeals and multiple direct response campaigns each year.
  • Support the Director of Development, Executive Director, and Board of Directors in the annual gala and individual donor cultivation events.
  • Supervise and mentor Development Associate and Development Volunteer(s).

The Development Manager is a 5-day a week, Full-Time position with benefits, and officially reports to the Development Director.

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of relevant non-profit fundraising experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization, multi-tasking, attention to detail, research and analytical skills.
  • Highly motivated with ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Proactive with ability to work independently and to problem-solve.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and open to flexible hours around fundraising events, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Strong interest in the area of violence against women and/or Asian communities.

Counselor Advocate (Japanese speaking) - Full Time

Reports to: Supervisory Counselor Advocate

The goal of Client Services is to provide the comprehensive direct services that support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. The intent is for all staff contributes towards client gaining self-sufficiency.

The Counselor Advocate’s primary responsibilities are to ensure all clients receive prompt and professional services and provide therapeutic support that encourages self- sufficiency and empowerment.

Founded in 1982, the New York Asian Women’s Center is the first organization on the East Coast to address the issues of domestic violence in the Asian communities. With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for battered Asian women, the NYAWC provides counseling and advocacy to Asian battered women, children who have witnessed domestic violence.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of human trafficking, sexual assault and domestic violence survivors.
  • Provide assessments, empowerment counseling services, and crisis intervention.
  • Ensure that clients receive advocacy and accompaniment – either directly from the Counselor Advocate or with assistance of a volunteer - to gain remedies and/or benefits in family and criminal court, welfare office and attorney’s offices.
  • Provide legal, immigration, entitlement and housing information and referrals.
  • Maintain proper documentation of case work and organization of case files.
  • Coordinate with co-workers to provide office coverage and answer the hotline.
  • Represent NYAWC in outreach/community education events, particularly to Japanese communities and other Asian neighborhoods in close proximity to the community office.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Counselor Advocate (South Asian language speaking) – Full-Time

Reports to: Supervisor Counselor Advocate

The New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) provides a safe haven and empowers survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking to govern their own lives. It is the largest minority run and minority governed agency in New York State. Founded in 1982, NYAWC is the only pan-Asian agency with a 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and a New York State licensed residential program in the east coast. NYAWC provides counseling, case management and advocacy services for over 600 women and children each year. We also offer transitional housing, legal immigration services and a ground-breaking prevention program.

Project Free is the anti-human trafficking (HT) project at NYAWC comprised of: community outreach and awareness raising, the Asian Women’s Empowerment (AWE) program, court advocacy, counseling/case management and immigration legal services. Project Free is one of the very few places in New York City where pan-Asian trafficking survivors can receive culturally and linguistically appropriate services that help them regain their freedom, recover from trauma and reach stability and self-sufficiency. Since its launch in 2005, Project Free has assisted over 400 individuals and families. Project Free participates in policy advocacy to bring about positive change in human trafficking laws in the United States, New York State and New York City.

The Counselor Advocate’s primary responsibilities are to ensure that all clients receive prompt and professional services and provide therapeutic support that encourages self-sufficiency and empowerment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of human trafficking survivors.
  • Provide assessments, empowerment counseling services and crisis intervention.

  • Coordinate some aspects of Project Free.
  • Maintain proper documentation of case work and organization of case files.
  • Provide coverage for hotline calls as necessary.
  • Represent NYAWC in outreach/community education events, particularly in the South Asian community and other Asian neighborhoods.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications/ Skills:

  • Required: Bachelors in Social Work, Psychology or related field with a clinical focus, plus at least 2 years direct practice with vulnerable populations. Preferred: Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Must be fluent in English and a South Asian Language.
  • Experience with anti-violence work, the Asian community, criminal justice, client advocacy and human trafficking.
  • Ability to be self-directing and highly motivated.
  • Must be flexible with hours. The current schedule is from Tuesday through Saturdays.

FT Counselor Advocate - Mandarin Speaking

Reports to: Supervisory Counselor Advocate

NYAWC (The New York Asian Women’s Center) is the largest Asian American focused domestic violence agency in the country, a premier human trafficking serving organization, and a national demonstration project that provides model services to survivors of sexual assault.  This year NYAWC has doubled our staffing for DV services.  Our long-standing program for children of survivors of DV, transitional housing services and legal immigration services are outstanding.  Most recently we have begun a program to provide services to children who were sexually abused and a robust program to assist Asians over 50 years of age who were abused by people they trust.  

In 2014 we saw well over 1,200 survivors and their children, about 100 of whom resided in our short-term (up to 6 months) shelters and the others in community offices in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, and at the NYC run Family Justice Centers (FJC) in those three boroughs.  Our hotline responds to well over 3,000 calls each year. Collectively the staff speaks 18 or so Asian languages or dialects and Spanish.  

In 2015 we are implementing an Asian-based culturally-competent model of practice.  We intend to help survivors of violence at least make substantial steps toward recovering from trauma.  This model of practice focuses on facilitating recovery through the relationship between the counselor and the survivor, teaching self-care, providing group services and utilizing Asian wellness practices.

The Counselor Advocate’s primary responsibilities are to ensure all clients receive prompt and professional services and provide therapeutic support that encourages self- sufficiency and empowerment. (S)he will manage a caseload of domestic violence survivors and will provide them with counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, accompaniment, information and referrals to available resources.  Additional resources can include legal, immigration, assistance accessing entitlements and housing services.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelors in Social Work, Psychology or related field

Cantonese-Speaking Counselor Advocate – Full-Time

Reports to: Later in Life Program Manager

Background

The New York Asian Women's Center (NYAWC) helps women and their children overcome domestic violence and other forms of abuse by empowering them to govern their own lives.  NYAWC provides a safe haven through multilingual support programs and shelter services.  We also work to raise public awareness about violence against women, advocate for the rights of survivors, and act as an agent of social change.  Recognizing that every survivor's circumstances and life experiences are unique and distinct, NYAWC aims to provide services that are not only culturally sensitive and empowering, but tailored to individual needs. 

Currently, NYAWC’s services and outreach efforts are generally designed for survivors between 20 to 40 years of age.  Only about a sixth of our client population is aged 50 years and above.  The Later in Life Program was developed with our mission in mind and the vision to expand our programs and services to help survivors across the entire life span. 

The Role

The Counselor Advocate’s primary responsibilities are to ensure all clients receive prompt and professional services and provide therapeutic support that encourages self- sufficiency and empowerment.  This individual will be specializing in elder abuse survivors aged 60 and above across the 5 boroughs.  The Counselor Advocate will help to ensure that all clients receive prompt and professional services.  This individual will provide therapeutic support that encourages self- sufficiency and empowerment.  They will provide survivors with counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, home visits, information and referrals to available resources.  Additional resources can include legal, immigration, assistance accessing entitlements and housing services. 

The Counselor Advocate will also engage in community outreach activities and collaborations with senior programs and service providers.  These activities include presentations, workshops, events, and projects to promote awareness of elderly abuse in the Pan-Asian community.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Passion for working with seniors and older adults
  • Experience with counseling, anti-violence work, the Asian community, criminal justice, client advocacy, and/or elder abuse
  • Bachelors in Social Work, Psychology or related field

NYAWC Legal Department - Legal Internship

About NYAWC:

The New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) helps women and their children, as well as men, to overcome domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking, and other forms of abuse by empowering them to govern their own lives.  The Center provides a safe haven through multi-lingual support programs and shelter services.  The Center’s Legal Department was established in 2011 and is focused on assisting the Center’s clients with immigration relief to break the power and control of their abusers.

Legal Internship:

NYAWC’s legal department seeks graduates and students in law school, graduate school, and college to work with the Center’s domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking survivors in related areas of immigration law. (The complexity of the work will depend on the intern’s education and work experience.)

  • Interns will work directly with clients on various forms of immigration relief, including VAWA, BSW, U nonimmigrant status, and T nonimmigrant status, and occasionally DACA, and will assist the Center’s immigration attorney with other case-related matters.
  • Interns will have extensive opportunity to work directly with clients, develop client narratives, draft applications, compile evidence, and research legal topics as they arise.
  • Interns may also assist in providing interpretation at family law clinics and preparing for immigration and advocacy presentations.

For fall or spring semester internships, interns will need to commit to at least 10 hours per week for 10 weeks during the semester.  For summer internships, interns will need to commit to 40 hours per week for 10 weeks; interns can commit to additional time, but it is not required.  The position is unpaid, but will offer significant opportunities for initiative and autonomy.  Offers are conditioned upon clearance in a background check.

Qualifications/Skills:

Interns should be able to work independently, think critically, be attentive to detail, and have strong communication skills.  Interns should ideally be orally proficient in an East Asian language, preferably Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, or Korean. There is also a preference for those who can read and write Chinese, Korean, or Japanese.

On-Call Resident Supporter

Reports to: Residential Manager or Assistant Director of Shelters

The goal of the NYAWC's Emergency Residential Program is to provide a safe environment that will support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence and will aid in their reintegration into the community.

The intent of our Residential Program is to be salubrious: all residential program staff works together to promote strong relationships between mother and child and supportive adult-to-adult interactions.  We reinforce positive behavior and healthy attitudes.  We assist residents in gaining essential skills and aim to advance psychological functioning.

The On-call Resident Supporter provides coverage at the shelter on an as-needed basis. The On-call RS may agree to stand in for all or some of the permanent staff positions as desired, covering weekday, weeknight, weekday afternoon, weekend days, or weekend nights, or a combination of the above.

If the On-call RS wishes to work on weekdays, one of their primary responsibilities will be to provide child care services to children living in shelter. And all On-call Resident Supporters will be responsible, under the direction of the Residential Manager or Assistant Director, for a variety of other tasks necessary to the smooth running of our programs and facilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the facility is maintained in a safe and harmonious manner, including helping residents manage crises, solve problems, and resolve conflicts
  • Support and strengthen the functioning of women and their children as well as other NYAWC staff
  • Ensure the well being and advancement of the children in the residence. If working on weekdays:
    • Provide direct child care services that are safe and comforting to children, including feeding/changing, supervising, empowering and enriching children
    • Prepare and record meals according to CACFP regulations
    • Coordinate child enrichment programs
    • Work with the Children’s and Women’s Counselors to improve care and functioning of the children
  • If working day shifts at any time, perform in-person assessment of incoming clients
  • If working night or weekend shifts, answer hotline
  • Liaise and communicate with outside agents
  • Perform maintenance tasks as needed (for example, room preparation and light cleaning)
  • Ensure that the residence is appropriately staffed according to regulations, meaning the staff member cannot leave until her/his replacement arrives and must be on call for extra shifts in case of emergency
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bi-lingual in an Asian language or Spanish a plus , but not required
  • At least 1 years’ experience in similar field or working with children preferred
  • Willingness to be trained
  • Ability to work independently, highly motivated, strong multitasking skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of CPR/First Aid, fire safety a plus
