Success Stories

“When I first came to the NYAWC, I did not understand what had happened to me. The abuse started so gradually, I did not realize how bad it had become. I never thought it could happen to me, and since we weren’t married I did not know if it would be considered domestic violence. Talking to my NYAWC counselor about the violence helped me see it for what it was”

Honors & Accolades About NYAWC

NYAWC has received numerous awards for our work with Asian battered immigrant women and their children.

In recent years, NYAWC has been selected as a Community Champion by Newsday and Executive Director Tuhina De O'Connor was named a Hero by the Robin Hood Foundation.

Other past accolades include awards from President George H.W. Bush, Governors Cuomo and Pataki, City Council Members John C. Liu and Bill de Blasio, Asian Pacific Network, New York University, United Way, Brooklyn DA's office, Columbia University, National Victim Center, MFY Legal Services, and the Korean American Family Service Center.

What people say about us…

“My district is one of the most diverse in the City and many of my constituents have called my office seeking help because of an abusive spouse. Because of language problems, one of the only places that I am able to refer these calls for help is to the NYAWC.”
— John C. Liu, New York City Council Member

“The services you provide not only improve the quality of life for the child, but strengthen the family as well.”
— Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

“The reason I refer people to the NYAWC is because we believe them to be the best in the business, being responsive to the needs of the women in the Asian community, being culturally appropriate in that response and culturally affirming.”
— Lucia Davis-Raiford, former head of the Domestic Violence unit at the New York City Police Department

“What we found exceptional about the NYAWC is the organization's cultural sensitivity and the specificity with which the programs are designed…Among the New York Women's Foundation grantees, the NYAWC is considered a model.”
— The New York Women's Foundation
